Getting There - The Basics:

1. Decide how much time & money you are willing to invest in your web site.

The web today is not unlike the "Wild West", and the tenderfoot can easily get burnt! Before you set out on this grand adventure, plan ahead. Seriously think about what you want you web site to be, and what you hope to accomplish with it. This will determine the potential complexity of your website, and therefore this is the absolute first step. Then decide if you are willing to expend the time and deal with the frustration of putting up your own web site, or if you would prefer to pay an experienced webmaster to do the job for you.

If you decide on a webmaster, discuss your plans with them, and listen to what they reply. Do they discuss your plans with you and point out any special points of interest that could be expanded on or optimized for the best web results. Do they also point out potential problems and suggest alternate routes. Are they enthusiastic, and do they have ideas of their own, or do you get the impression that this is "just another job" to them or worse yet, just a "sideline to their real job. Do you believe they really want to work with you and go beyond what is merely required to get the job done, because if your dream is a complex site or one that will need to be upgraded regularly, you will have to work closely with this person, just as you would a lawyer or an accountant. Look at live examples of their work, (Or have an experienced web surfing friend check them out for you.) ask for -- and check -- client references, and get a firm, written estimate. Then decide which candidate you will feel the most comfortable working with, and make your choice.

If you choose to do so yourself, or let a willing volunteer or employee do so for you, plan on spending many days, perhaps even weeks or months, learning the lingo, and price and comparison shopping for hosting space, editing and design software or programming skills, graphics programs, and equipment. Then plan on spending a great many more hours learning how to use these new additions to your life. Once your website is built, tested, re-tested and up and running, plan on spending many more hours making changes, and design upgrades as you learn all the tricks necessary to make your page fast loading, efficient, and cross platform compatible.
